Background: Liverpool came a step nearer to winning the First Division Championship Title today (Saturday) when it beat Manchester United by three goals to nil.
The game began with Manchester United appearing to have the edge on their Liverpool opponents - but this situation was short-lived and Liverpool were soon dominating play. Again and again they attacked the Manchester goal mouth - and repeatedly they were driven back by Graham Gregg, Manchester United's goal-keeper. The first goal came after five minutes, when a corner came across to Liverpool's Callaghan - who punched it past Gregg to put Liverpool into the lead. Liverpool's supporters, and there were many thousands of them, went wild.
Soon after the first goal, the Liverpool player St. John collided heavily with the Manchester goal-keeper and for a time it looked as if both players might have to retire. However, after four minutes both of them were able to get up and they continued to play for the rest of the game.
Arrowsmith kicked the second goal for Liverpool after a moment of confusion in front of the goal mouth.
In the second spell another goal was added and Liverpool won the match three goals to nil.
