SCOTLAND YARD AND SECURITY AGENTS TODAY (SUNDAY) FLASHED ALERTS TO ALL BRITISH AIRPORTS AND HARBOURS IN A NATION-WIDE MANHUNT FOR SOVIET MASTER SPY, GEORGE BLAKE, WHO ESCAPED FROM LONDON'S WORMWOOD SCRUBS PRISON LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY).

BLAKE, A FORMER BRITISH DIPLOMAT TURNED SPY, IS ONE OF THE GREAT MYSTERY MEN OF INTERNATIONAL ESPIONAGE. THE SECRETS HE PASSED TO THE RUSSIANS OVER A NINE-YEAR PERIOD LED TO HIM BEING SENTENCED TO 42 YEARS JAIL IN 1961 -- THE LONGEST PRISON SENTENCE EVER IMPOSED IN BRITAIN.

HIS SENSATIONAL ESCAPE WAS DISCOVERED WHEN HE FAILED TO ANSWER A ROUTINE ROLL-CALL LAST NIGHT. WARDERS FOUND BARS SAWN THROUGH ON A NEARBY LANDING, AND A ROPE LADDER WAS DISCOVERED HANGING DOWN INSIDE THE PRISON WALL.

SECURITY MEN BELEIVED THE ESCAPE WAS PLANNED BY MEN WAITING OUTSIDE TO DRIVE HIM AWAY. EVERY AVAILABLE MAN WAS CALLED IN TO SEARCH THE IMMEDIATE AREA WITH TRACKER DOGS. AND LOOK-OUTS WERE POSTED NEAR THE EMBASSIES OF COMMUNIST COUNTRIES IN CASE BLAKE ATTEMPTED TO SEEK POLITICAL ASYLUM.

WHEN BLAKE WAS SENTENCED AT THE CENTRAL CRIMINAL COURT, IN LONDON, THE LORD CHIEF JUSTICE, LORD PARKER, SAID THE INFORMATION HE HAD PASSED TO THE SOVIET RENDERED MUCH OF BRITAIN'S ESPIONAGE AND INTELLIGENCE WORK COMPLETELY USELESS.

DURING HIS TRIAL, BLAKE CONFESSED THAT HE HAD PASSED TO THE SOVIET EVERY OFFICIAL DOCUMENT OF ANY IMPORTANCE TO WHICH HE HAD ACCESS. THE NATURE OF THE INFORMATION HE DISCLOSED TO THE SOVIET HAS NEVER BEEN MADE PUBLIC.

BLAKE WAS BORN IN ROTTERDAM 43 YEARS AGO, BUT ADOPTED BRITISH CITIZENSHIP AND SERVED WITH THE DUTCH RESISTANCE DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. HE VOLUNTEERED FOR SERVICE IN THE ROYAL NAVY IN 1943.

FROM 1948 UNTIL HIS ARREST IN 1961, HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH FOREIGN OFFICE. HE BECAME VICE-CONSUL IN KOREA IN 1950, AND WAS BASED IN SEOUL. THROUGHOUT HIS SERVICE WITH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT HE WAS ENGAGED ON INTELLIGENCE.

WHEN THE KOREAN WAR STARTED HE WAS CAPTURED BY THE NORTH KOREANS AND INTERNED FOR 17 MONTHS. WHEN HIS SPYING ACTIVITIES WERE UNCOVERED, BLAKE WAS LIVING WITH HIS WIFE AND THREE CHILDREN IN BEIRUT, WHERE HE WAS STUDYING ARABIC AT THE MIDDLE EAST CENTRE FOR ARABIC STUDIES.
