Canadian police have mounted a full-scale investigation into the kidnapping of Mr. James Richard Cross, the senior British trade commissioner in Montreal, form his home yesterday (October 5).
Mr. Cross kidnapped by members of the Quebec Liberation Front who demanded 500,000 Canadian dollars (GBP208,000) in gold, the release of 12 jailed separatists, and safe passage to Cuba.
According to police, four men delivered a parcel which they said was a birthday present for Mr. Cross. The maid who answered the door was forced into mr. Cross's bedroom where he was asleep. They ordered him to dress, handcuffed him, and forced him into a taxi, whose driver was being held at gunpoint.
Later his wife Brabara, received a telephone call about the abduction.
The incident was deplored by the Canadian Minister for External Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Sharp.
