  • Description

An adoption ceremony, made possible because of a unique friendship which developed between a British tank unit and a group of Westgerman villages in the Soltau - Lueneburg area, took place in the Schoeneberger Rathaus on Monday 29-06-64.

The Independent Squadron Royal Tank Regiment, stationed at Smuts Barracks, Spandau, Berlin, was adopted by Kreis Harburg within whose boundaries the tank men trained last November.

Until Independent Squadron, commanded by Major Richard Lawson, went to the training area it had been customary for soldiers to camp in the woods. But for the tank men it was different. They asked if they could live with local German farming families in the villages of Soderstorf and Steinbeck. Kreis Harburg agreed to the novelty with enthusiasm and the tank men were billeted in the farmers' homes.

The experiment was so successful and so many firm friendships were made that before the tank men returned to Berlin the farmers had resolved that Kreis Harburg should adopt Independent Squadron.

This they did and Monday's ceremony, the official seal of friendship, is the outcome.

A 16-strong Kreis Harburg delegation presented the tank men with their crest, in copper and silver, together with a scroll.
