  • Description

In France, a representative of the Kurdish movement has warned that the Kurds in Iran are well armed and prepared to fight. Mr. Kendal Nezan, of the Iranian Kurdistan Democratic Party (IKDP), announced in Paris that there would be widespread violence in Iran if the revolutionary government there refused to grant local autonomy to the Kurds. he said a minor clash could develop into a full-scale religious and racial war. Later, another representative of the Kurdish movement outlined his organisation's aims at a news conference in Paris on Monday (14 May). The representative wished to remain anonymous and would only agree to be filmed in silhouette.

SYNOPSIS: He stressed that the growth of Kurdish nationalism was a natural development in the modern world when so many small states were fighting for and achieving independence. He parallel the size of Kurdistan to that of France, with a population of between twenty and twenty-five million, pointing out the country was the only state int he world of that size and importance which did not have national autonomy.

The speaker emphasised that the principal objective of the Kurdish people living of the Kurdish people living in Iran, Iraq and Turkey was not separatism, but autonomy within the existing states. He said the only true guarantee of such national statehood would be the establishment of democratic regimes in the autonomous Kurdish states, and that without this any solution to the question of Kurdish independence would be only temporary.
