  • Description

THE TELAGUS OUTPOST IN SERIAN, SOUTHERN SARAWAK, IS ABOUT FOUR MILES FROM THE INDONESIAN BORDER. IT IS MANNED BY THE FOURTH BATTALION, ROYAL MALAY REGIMENT.

TELAGUS IS A RUGGED JUNGLE AREA WHERE SIX INDONESIAN INCURSIONS HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE PAST MONTH. ALL HAVE BEEN REPULSED BY THE MALAY TROOPS. THE CLANDESTINE COMMUNIST ORGANISATION IS ALSO LOCATED IN THE AREA.

HIDDEN SECTIONS WATCH DAY AND NIGHT FROM AMBUSHES NEAR THE TRACKS, AND A SERIES OF SIGNALS AND ALARMS ARE SET UP TO WARN THE OUTPOST OF APPROACHING INFILTRATORS.

THE INDONESIAN FORCES STATIONED JUST ACROSS THE BORDER, SERVED ALONGSIDE THE FOURTH BATTALION, ROYAL MALAY REGIMENT IN THE CONGO IN 1960.

THE 80 - MILE BORDER IS CONSTANTLY PATROLLED AND THE TRACKS GUARDED BY AMBUSH SECTIONS. THE LAND DYAKS OR THE AREA CO-OPERATE WITH THE MALAY TROOPS IN REPORTING INCURSIONS.

LAND DYAKS FROM KALIMANTAN (INDONESIAN BORNEO), ARE ALLOWED TO PASS ALONG THE TRACKS TO TELAGUS AND TRADE ON MALAYSIAN TERRITORY. SOME OF THEM WALK FOR UP TO SIX DAYS TO GET TO TELAGUS.
