Background: England's cricket team, two down in the six test series, was struggling at the end of the fourth day's play of the fourth test in Sydney on Wednesday (8 January). Australia, on top for the entire match, declared at four-for-289 in its second innings leaving England 400 runs to make in just over a day to win the game.
Australia owed its batting superiority to Greg Chappell who followed up his 84 in the first innings with 144 in the second... his first century of the series. Ian Redpath hit 105 to out Australia beyond defeat.
At stumps England was none for 33 needing to bat throughout the last day to draw the game and give themselves a chance of holding the Ashes.
