Background: Prime Minister Jalloud of Libya held a press conference at the Hilton hotel in rome this morning. He had been expected to make announcement about a planes deal with the italian government. According to the italian state owned efim company, the Libyans are interested in buying 200 single engined propeller driven SF-260 training planes for a cost of approximately 150 million dollars. 80 of these planes would be built entirely in Italy, the other 120 would be assembled in Libya with Italian made parts. This would mean building an assembly line in Libya which would be used for the construction of other planes in the future.
Planes would probably be destined for a new military flying school near Tripoli.
In the recent past the state owned aeritalia also tried to sell G-222 transport planes to libya but there was a veto from the USA govt.
