  • Description

Archaeologists in Cyprus have found a 1,500 year old mosaic pavement at the site of a Byzantine cathedral in Paphos.

SYNOPSIS: The basilica, which is near the Pillar of Saint Paul, was built originally in the fourth century. It was modified between then and the fourth century. It was modified between then and the seventh century, when it was destroyed by Arabs.

The mosaics formed the original pavement between the outer and inner apses of the central nave of the basilica. All the mosaics uncovered in the latest excavations are being protected by coverings of sand until the area has been prepared for visitors.

Richly coloured geometric designs make up most of the mosaic pavement, but one panel features a stag drinking water form a brook and a quotation in Greek form the biblical Psalm 42. The basilica was built near the spot where Saint Paul was bound and beaten.
