  • Description

THE OPPOSING SIDES THE NIGERIAN WAR MADE CONFLICTING CLAIMS OF MILITARY SUCCESS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) -- LAOS CLAIMING ADVANCES IN THE UMUAHIA DISTRICT WHILE THE BREAKAWAY BIAFRAN FORCES CLAIMED SUCCESS AT THE CROSS RIVER. AT THE SAME TIME, THERE WERE FURTHER NEGOTIATIONS IN LAGOS ON THE HANDOVER OF RELIEF ACTIVITIES FROM THE RED CROSS TO A NIGERIAN COMMISSION, WHILE SECESSIONIST BIAFRA DEMANDED INTERNATIONAL GUARANTEES AGAINST THE "MISUSE" OF DAYLIGHT RELIEF FLIGHTS.

TODAY, REPERCUSSIONS OF THE CONFLICT COULD BE SEEN IN THE CENTRE OF LONDON. NIGERIANS FROM THE RIVER STATES MARCHED THROUGH WHITEHALL AND PARLIAMENT SQUARE TO WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL TO PROTEST PUBLICLY AGAINST ALLEGED CATHOLIC BIAS IN FAVOUR OF BREAKAWAY BIAFRA, WHICH HAS A LARGE NUMBER OF CATHOLIC INHABITANTS.

THE RIVER STATE WERE CLAIMED BY THE SECESSIONISTS WHEN THEY BROKE AWAY FROM THE FEDERATION; THE DEMONSTRATORS -- DOMICILED IN LONDON, BUT ORIGINATING IN THESE STATES -- WANT THEM TO BE PART OF THE FEDERATION.

THEY PROCLAIMED THAT THEY WERE PROTESTING AGAINST ROMAN CATHOLIC "INTERFERENCE IN THE INTERNAL POLITICS OF NIGERIA".

CARDINAL HEENAN - HEAD OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN BRITAIN -- WHO SAID A WEEK AGO (6 JULY) THAT "PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY FEEL GENERALLY THOROUGHLY ASHAMED OF THEIR COUNTRY'S PART IN THE (NIGERIAN) WAR," AND THAT BRITAIN WAS "HELPING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO STARVE INTO SUBMISSION THE UNFORTUNATE BIAFRANS", WAS ONE OF THE CHIEF TARGETS OF TODAY'S DEMONSTRATORS. HIS NAME WAS LINKED IN THEIR ANGRY PROTESTS WITH THAT OF THE POPE, AND A LETTER OF PROTEST WAS HANDED IN AT HIS RESIDENCE.
