  • Description

AN OUTSIDER TODAY (SUNDAY) WON THE ANNUAL LONDON-TO-BRIGHTON FRUIT BARROW RACE, STAGED BY THE LONDON FOOD MARKETS. IN POURING RAIN, THE WINNING TEAM TOOK JUST OVER TEN HOURS TO PUSH ITS FRUIT-LADEN BARROW THE 52 MILES (84 KMS) TO THE SOUTHERN ENGLAND COASTAL RESORT.

ONE TEAM FROM EACH OF LONDON'S FIVE MAIN MARKETS-BOROUGH, COVENT GARDEN, BILLINGSGATE, SMITHFIELD AND SPITALSFIELDS - TOOK PART. THE RACE BEGAN FROM THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT AT MIDNIGHT.

BY DAWN, AS THE TEAMS STRAGGLED INTO THE SUSSEX COUNTRYSIDE, IT WAS BOROUGH SETTING THE PACE. SMITHFIELD WAS CLOSE BEHIND. THE THREE OTHERS WERE LEFT PANTING BEHIND - DE DESPITE WEEK'S OF INTENSIVE TRAINING. THEY FOUND THEIR 300-LB (136-KG) LOAD TOO MUCH, NOT TO MENTION THE HILLS.

EACH TEAM WAS LIMITED TO TEN MEN AND ACCOMPANIED BY AN UMPIRE TO ENSURE THE NUMEROUS RULES WERE OBEYED. BIG BETS HAD BEEN PLACED ON THE RESULT, WITH COVENT GARDEN A CLEAR FAVOURITE. BUT AT THE FINISH IT WAS BOROUGH STILL IN THE LEAD AND SMITHFIELD SECOND. THE WINNERS WERE PRESENTED WITH A CHEQUE FOR GBP50. SMITHFIELD GOT GBP25 FOR THEIR EFFORTS.

AND ALL THAT FRUIT? IT WAS PRESENTED TO A BRIGHTON HOSPITAL.
