TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 4: HEMER AMMAD: "The PLO is launching what we call its campaign, for, in West Europe. This means that what we have seen in this conference, whether on the level of the participants, especially from the Italian part where representatives from the main political, Italian political forces have participated or from the important personalities of Europe has proved that the Palestinian problem have really arrived for European public opinion. This means that the possibility of arriving at a just peace for the Middle East problem including the right of the Palestinian people for self determination and the right of the creation of their independent state, is passing now in a period where we can say that we are optimistic."

SEQ. 5: YURI ANERI: "They've made it quite clear that the PLO is now ready to settle for a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza and that all other outstanding issues between Israel and the Palestinian people will be settled peacefully. I think this is a basis for conducted negotiations and we should certainly return home with a greater determination to try to convince the Knesset, of which I am a member, and Israeli public opinion in general to treat the Palestinian problem rationally, sensibly and with a view to achieving peace with the Palestinian people."

Background: The first public meeting between representatives of the Israeli government and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) resulted in both sides declaring there were grounds for optimism and the basis of a possible agreement to solve the problem of the conflict in the Middle East. The three day conference was held in Rome to discuss the issue of Palestinian rights and was attended by delegates from twenty countries, including the Soviet Union and the United States.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting was sponsored by an Italian-palestinian Friendship Committee. One the second day of the conference, on Thursday (27 September), an PLO official said his organisation would be willing to begin talks with Israel if it were given an area of land in which to create an independent state. This was interpreted as a modification of traditional hardline PLO policy. The Israeli delegation -- which included members of the Knesset -- responded by declaring as willingness to support the idea of peace talks Hemer Ammad, of the PLO, and israeli representative, Yuri Aneri, commented on the meeting.
