    THE SALUTE WAS TAKEN BY PRESIDENT AZIKIWE, DRESSED IN THE UNIFORM OF AN ADMIRAL OF THE NIGERIAN FLEET. IN A NATIONWIDE RADIO SPEECH ON THE EVE OF THE CELEBRATIONS, PRESIDENT AZIKIWE HAD CALLED FOR AN END OF WHAT HE CALLED "THE INSIDIOUS ACTIVITIES OF THE COMMON ENEMIES OF NIGERIA - TRIBALISM, NEPOTISM, PERFIDY, BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION."
    YESTERDAY'S CELEBRATIONS IN LAGOS WERE ALMOST MARRED BY A STRIKE OF NIGERIAN SCHOOL TEACHERS, WHO ARE DEMANDING UNIFORM WAGES AND WORKING CONDITIONS THROUGHOUT NIGERIA. AT THE LAST MINUTE, SCHOOLCHILDREN WHO WERE TO TAKE PART IN THE PARADE WERE TAKEN THERE BY ARMY PERSONNEL.

    (THE CELEBRATIONS ENDED ON THURSDAY NIGHT WITH A STATE PARTY IN LAGOS ATTENDED BY PRESIDENT AZIKIWE, THE PRIME MINISTER, SIR ABUBAKAR TAFAWA BALEWA, AND OTHER EMINENT PEOPLE INCLUDING MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS.

    NIGERIA, ON THE WEST COAST OF THE AFRICA, HAS A POPULATION OF ABOUT 40,000,000. IT BECAME INDEPENDENT IN OCTOBER 1960, AND A REPUBLIC IN OCTOBER LAST YEAR.)
