TRANSCRIPT: RIGGS: "Shooting broke out again last night at the Justus coal mine in Stearns, Kentucky. It's been like a battlefield here since February, shortly after contract talks broke down between miners and the mine owners."

SEQ. 6: MINER: "We're the only ones in the open.Everyone's under cover except us."

RIGGS: "Last night sporadic shooting could be heard until almost midnight. About 500 shots were fired. The gun-fire and explosions can be heard in these hills almost every night. Each side blames the other for starting the violence. The miners claim these shots came from armed guards hired to protect the mine, but they admit they have fired back in the past."

"No one was hurt this time, but buildings in the area have been shot up. A miner was shot in the leg this week and three mine guards were wounded earlier. Lawmen say there isn't much they can do to stop it, although a guard was arrested after the miner was wounded this week."

"The trouble stems from two demands made by the miners. They want the company to recognise the United Mine Workers as their bargaining agent, and they want a safety committee made up mostly of miners that could pull the men out of the mine when they feel it's too dangerous to work. They're afraid."

MINER: "Why do we have to die for the coal they get out of that mine down there? Why? Why?

RIGGS: "Coal mine owners would not talk to NBC this weekend about the strike. A strike at another Kentucky mine four years ago did not end until a miner was shot to death. And the miners are afraid the same will happen here before it's over Dave Riggs, NBC News."
