  • Description

TWO PEOPLE WERE REPORTED KILLED IN BRUSSELS ON TUESDAY (23 MARCH) WHEN A MARCH BY MORE THAN 50,000 COMMON MARKET FARMERS ENDED IN A RUNNING. BATTLE BETWEEN POLICE AND MARCHERS. THE FARMERS WERE IN BRUSSELS TO LEND WEIGHT TO THEIR CALL FOR HIGHER FARM PRICES IN THE EEC (EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY). THE DEMONSTRATION WAS TIMED TO COINCIDE WITH THE FINAL MEETING OF THE EEC'S AGRICULTURE MINISTERS WHO WERE DECIDING PRICE INCREASES FOR THE NEW SEASON BEGINNING APRIL THE 1ST.

THE DISCONTENT OF THE COMMUNITY FARMERS WITH THE COMMON AGRICULTURAL POLICY HAS BEEN CLEAR FOR SOME TIME, BUT TUESDAY'S INCIDENT, INVOLVING MORE THAN 50,000 FARMERS FROM ALL SIX MEMBER COUNTRIES OF THE EEC, HAS ADDED A NEW DIMENSION TO EEC POLITICS.

VISNEWS CAMERAMAN PIERRE RIHOUET BROUGHT OUR THIS EXCELLENT COVERAGE, IN SPITE OF HAVING TO WITHDRAW AT ONE POINT AFTER BEING HIT BY A TEAR GAS CONTAINER SHOT BY THE POLICE.
