  • Description

The annual 19-mile marathon swimming race from Capri to Naples, was won July 24 by Mohammed Zaytoun from the Syrian region of the United Arab Republic. His time of 10 hours 38 minutes 48.2 seconds was almost 22 minutes slower than last year's winner, Laszlo Kovacs of Hungary, who this year finished almost an hour later than Zaytoun.

Twenty swimmers from various countries set off from Capri, but only six finished the course. Extremely bad weather compelled many to retire quite early in the race.

This year's race - the seventh since its inception - was a complete surprise for the many backers of Laszlo. Not only had they wagered that he would win, but they had also forecast that Alfredo Camarero of Argentine would be second as he was last year. Second in this year's race was Diki Boyardi of Yugoslavia. Both first and second places were filled by comparatively unknowns in this gruelling sport of marathon swimming.
