  • Description

VISNEWS filmed Seretse Khama June 7th at London Airport on arrival from Bechuanaland to visit his uncle Tshekedi Khama, seriously in the London Clinic.

Tshekedi, 54 years old, flew to London last month for treatment for a Kidney complaint, but his condition gives such cause for anxiety that Seretse flew immediately to his bedside.

Tshekedi succeeded his father Khama as Regent of the Bamangwato tribe of Bechuanaland, a British Protectorate in S.Africa of over a quarter of a million square miles - population 294,000 but was banished for ordering the flogging of a white man.

He opposed the wedding of nephew Seretse to London typist Ruth Williams so violently that eventually both Tshekedi and Seretse were banished and the chieftainship of the Bamangwato, the largest of the tribes is at present in abeyance.
