  • Description

THE SOVIET UNION'S TRADITIONAL MAY DAY PARADE OF ARMED MIGHT THROUGH RED SQUARE IN MOSCOW REVEALED NO NEW WEAPONS IN THE PROCESSION OF MEN AND WEAPONS TODAY (MONDAY). EIGHT THOUSAND TROOPS SELF-PROPELLED ROCKETS AND SUBMARINE BALLISTIC MISSILES FORMED THE MAJOR PART OF THE MILITARY PARADE WHICH FILED THROUGH RED SQUARE IN BRIGHT SUNSHINE.

THE SOVIET UNION'S PARADE OF ARMOUR TOOK TEN MINUTES TO PASS THE SALUTING BASE. BECAUSE NO NEW WEAPONS WERE DISPLAYED, WESTERN MILITARY OBSERVERS BELIEVE THE SOVIET UNION IS KEEPING ANY NEW WEAPONS FOR ITS PARADE ON NOVEMBER 7, THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION.

AMONG SOVIET LEADERS WHO WATCHED THE PARADE WERE COMMUNIST PARTY LEADER LEONID BREZHNEV, PRIME MINISTER ALEXEI KOSYGIN, PRESIDENT NIKOLAI PADGORNY, AND THE NEW MINISTER OF DEFENCE, MARSHAL ADNREI GRECHKO.

THE MAY DAY PARADE THIS YEAR IS PART OF A THREE-DAY HOLIDAY IN THE SOVIET UNION AND IS ONLY THE FIRST OF A NUMBER OF HUGE CELEBRATIONS WHICH WILL BE HELD TO MARK THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REVOLUTION.

OTHER MAY DAY PARADES WERE HELD IN PEKING AND OTHER COMMUNIST CAPITALS, AND EAST AND WEST BERLIN.
