  • Description

MR. ALEX JOSEY, A BRITISH JOURNALIST, EXPELLED BY THE MALAYSIAN CENTRAL GOVERNMENT, SAID IN SINGAPORE TODAY (TUESDAY) BEFORE BOARDING AN AIRCRAFT FOR BRITAIN, THAT MALAYSIA SHOULD NOT ONLY TALK OF FREEDOM OF THE PRESS BUT SHOULD PRACTISE IT.

FIFTY-FIVE YEAR OLD MR. JOSEY, AN EXPERT IN PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE, WAS SEEN OFF BY HIS CLOSE FRIEND, MR.S. RAJARATNAM, SINGAPORE MINISTER FOR CULTURE AND SCORES OF WELL-WISHERS.

HE TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE THAT MALAY EXTREMISTS IN THE UNITED MALAY NATIONAL ORGANISATION (UMNO) --THE BACKBONE OF THE RULING ALLIANCE GOVERNMENT -- HAD CARRIED OUT A CAMPAIGN AGAINST HIM FOR SOMETIME, ADDING " I AM JUST A MINOR CASUALTY IN AN EXPERIMENT OF FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY IN MALAYSIA."
MR. JOSEY CAME TO MALAYA IN 1948 TO CONDUCT PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE AGAINST THE MALAYSIAN COMMUNIST PARTY. HE WAS ORDERED OUT OF THE COUNTRY A FORTNIGHT AGO FOR ALLEGEDLY INTERFERING IN LOCAL POLITICS. MEANWHILE, SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT LEADERS CLAIM THAT THE ACTION TAKEN AGAINST HIM WAS BECAUSE OF ARTICLES HE WROTE FOR THE FOREIGN PRESS WHICH WERE CRITICAL OF THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT.

MR. JOSEY HAS BEEN EMPLOYED BY THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT IN A PART-TIME CAPACITY TO ASSIST THE PRIME MINISTER IN PRESS RELATIONS WHEN MR. LEE KUAN YEW TRAVELLED ABROAD IN EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND.
