  • Description

A musical rendezvous to promote international understanding, Switzerland's 2nd International Youth Orchestra Festival this year attracted eight-hundred young musicians representing eight countries.

When the festival ended yesterday (Saturday), the young musicians had completed a busy fortnight of concerts under world famous conductors and seminars taken by top musicologists.

Altogether, nine different youth orchestras made appearance at the festival, giving concerts at cities throughout Switzerland.

Renowned guest conductors like Walter Susskind from Czechoslovakia and Britain's Rudolph Schwarz not only conducted the orchestras, but also discussed a full range of musical problems with their young players.

Organised for the first time only last year, the festival already shows signs of rapid expansion, and this year attracted orchestras from three continents -- America, Europe and Africa.

For yesterday's closing ceremony, the best musicians from each of the nine orchestras were selected to form the International Youth Festival Orchestra. Walter Susskind conducted their farewell performance.
