Five thousand Cypriots, many wearing national dress, were filmed by VISNEWS at London Airport Feb 15, as they gathered to welcome Archbishop Makarios on his arrival. Wearing billowing black robes, tall hat and carrying his great silver knobbed Bishops pole, he stepped from the aircraft that brought him from Athens.
At the invitation of the British Government the Archbishop is to attend a conference, opening in London Feb 17, aimed at reaching a final settlement on creating an independent Republic of Cyprus, based on agreements reached by Greek and Turkish Premiers during a six day talks session in Zurich recently.
During an interview at the Airport the Archbishop said;
Archbishop Makarios, unchallenged leader of Greek Cypriots and most likely to be the first President of the new Republic, was accompanied to London by Zeno Ressides, who has been his "Shadow Foreign Minister" in exile. Makarios is expected to oppose two British conditions for Cyprus Independence. One is that British should have exclusive sovereignty over British military enclaves in Cyprus; the other an Independent Cyprus should remain a member of the British Commonwealth.
Prime Minister Harold MacMillan has also invited Greek Premier Karamanlis and Turkish Premier Menderes.
Turkish-Cypriot leaders Dr. Fazil Kutchuk and Mr. Rauf Denktash, arrived at London Airport late Feb 15.
