    VOTERS IN MALAGASY TURNED OUT EARLY SUNDAY (DECEMBER 21) TO ELECT A NEW GOVERNMENT FOR A FIVE YEAR TERM. THE VOTERS CAME IN LARGE NUMBERS DESPITE A FLU EPIDEMIC WHICH IS SWEEPING THE COUNTRY.

    MALAGASY'S RULING SOCIAL DEMOCRAT PARTY WAS FAVOURED TO SWEEP THE POLLS. THE MAIN ISSUE IN THE ELECTIONS WAS CONTROL OF TANANARIVE, THE COUNTRY'S CAPITAL. THE CITY IS THE LAST REMAINING STRONGHOLD OF THE MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY, THE MADAGASCAR INDEPENDENCE CONGRESS PARTY.

    QUEUE'S OUTSIDE DOCTORS SURGERIES RIVALLED THOSE OUTSIDE THE POLLING BOOTHS. MANY PEOPLE RECEIVED TREATMENT FOR THE INFLUENZA SWEEPING THE COUNTRY, AND THEN CAST THEIR VOTE. PRESIDENT PHILIBERT TSIRANANA CAST HIS VOTE AT AMBOHITSOA NEAR THE CAPITAL.

    TROOPS WERE CONFINED TO BARRACKS AND SECURITY FORCES WERE PUT ON STANDBY THROUGHOUT POLLING DAY, BUT NO INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED.
