  • Description

At the end of the second day of the North Atlantic Treaty Foreign Ministers conference in Oslo, May 9, it was decided to set up a political advisory group to watch out for long-range problems both inside and outside the Alliance. They also agreed to send a committee of exports to Greece and Turkey to study their need for economic aid.

Earlier the United States Secretary of State, Mr. Rusk, announced that America ready to commit five Polaris-carrying submarines to NATO. He said that more submarines would be sent when available. Once again the question of West Berlin was discussed and Mr. Rusk gave the assurance that NATO would be kept informed of American policy on this subject.

Outside the Parliament Building in Oslo, where the conference is being hold, a group of demonstrators have staged a three-day protest against nuclear weapons. Representatives from six countries will stand outside the building round-the-clock. So far the demonstrators have been content to stand with their banners and slogans and have given the police no trouble.

Another session will be held, May 10, to approve of the final statement and with that all the topics on the agenda will have been completed.
