    OVER 40,000 REFUGEES WHO WERE FORCED TO SEEK REFUGE FROM THE FLOODS WHICH DEVASTATED LARGE AREAS OF MALAYSIA LAST WEEK, ARE BEGINNING TO RETURN TO THEIR VILLAGES FOR THE TASK OF CLEARING THE DEBRIS.

    THE FLOODS, THE WORST EVER TO HIT THE NATION, HAVE LEFT BEHIND A TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION. IN SOME AREAS OF THE NORTH ROADS ARE LYING BENEATH TWO TO THREE FEET OF MUD, BUT GRADUALLY THE MAIN TRUNK ROUTES ARE BEING OPENED TO TRAFFIC.

    SO FAR 20 PEOPLE ARE REPORTED TO HAVE DIED, WITH AT LEAST 20 MORE FEARED DEAD OR MISSING.

    COMMONWEALTH TROOPS STATIONED IN MALAYSIA HAVE BEEN HELPING IN THE WORK OF DISTRIBUTING FOOD TO OUTLYING AREAS AND ISOLATED VILLAGES.
