  • Description

At Fort Myer, Virginia, Aug 4, a funeral service was held for Major Willard G. Palm, of Topeka, Kansas, the 39-year-old pilot of American RB-47 aircraft shot down by a Russian fighter, July 1. The pilot, who was killed in the crash, was buried with full military honours at Arlington National Cemetery. His wife and children, and US Air Force General White were among those attending the service.

Shortly afterwards the United States made its third demand that Russia release two other members of the RB-47 crew - the plane's co-pilot and the navigator. The note complained that Russia had apparently decided to seal off the two airmen "from all contact with the outside world in flagrant disregard of international law and practice".

Washington's third demand was in answer to a Russian note, delivered Aug 2, repeating the Russian contention that the aircraft was engaged in espionage and warning the United States against further "provocative" flights. The Russian note also sought once again to relate the RB-47 flight with the U-2 incident of May 1. This was described in the American reply as a "deliberate attempt to confuse the two cases which were entirely different in character as the Soviet Government well knows."
