    DELEGATES FROM 35 AFRICAN COUNTRIES ARE MEETING IN ADDIS ABABA TO DISCUSS THE LATEST ECONOMIC CONDITIONS. THEY ARE ATTENDING THE SIXTH SESSION OF THE ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR AFRICA (ECA).

    THE MEETING WAS OPENED ON THURSDAY WITH A MESSAGE FROM ETHIOPIA'S EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE, WHO WAS UNABLE TO ATTEND. THE QUESTION OF REGIONAL CO-OPERATION IS ANOTHER MATTER HIGH ON THE AGENDA FOR THE TWO-WEEK CONFERENCE.

    DISCUSSIONS GOT UNDER WAY WITH A WARNING THAT THE INDEPENDENCE OF MEMBER STATES WAS THREATENED BY UNEMPLOYMENT, CONTINUING POVERTY AND THE DISAPPOINTED HOPES OF THE MASS OF AFRICAN PEOPLE.

    THE WARNING WAS SOUNDED BY MR. ROBERT GARDINER, THE GHANAIAN HEAD OF THE ECA. HE ATTACKED THE ECONOMIC DIVISION OF THE CONTINENT INTO THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH GROUP - ENJOYING IMPERIAL PREFERENCE - AND THE 18-NATION GROUP ASSOCIATED WITH THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET.
