  • Description

SOUTH VIETNAMESE PRESIDENT NGUYEN VAN THIEU FLEW INTO TAIPEI (TAIWAN) ON FRIDAY (MAY 30) TO BEGIN A FIVE-DAY STATE VISIT.

PRESIDENT THIEU ARRIVED AT THE CITY'S MILITARY AIRPORT. HE AND MADAME THIEU WERE WELCOMED BY TAIWAN'S GENERALISSIMO CHIANG KAI-SHEK AND HIS WIFE AT THE AIRPORT, AND WERE INTRODUCED TO HIGH RANKING MEMBERS OF TAIWAN'S GOVERNMENT AND CIVIL SERVICE, INCLUDING THE VICE-PRESIDENT, MR. C.K. YEN, AND FOREIGN MINISTER MR. WEI TAO-MING.

THE TWO PRESIDENTS DROVE PAST A GUARD OF HONOUR TO THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE IN AN OPEN CAR.

BUT ONCE THE OPENING CEREMONIALS WERE OVER, THIEU AND CHIANG KAI-SHEK WITHDREW FOR THE REAL PURPOSE OF THE VISIT - TALKS ON THE SECURITY OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC REGION. AFTER TWO SESSIONS OF DISCUSSIONS, OFFICIALS YESTERDAY STILL GAVE NO DETAILS, BUT SAID THAT THE TWO LEADERS TALKED ABOUT THE SITUATION IN VIETNAM AND REGIONAL CO-OPERATION.

TAIWAN IS NOT AMONG SOUTH VIETNAM'S WAR ALLIES, AND GENERALISSIMO CHIANG, THE OFFICIALS SAID, AVOIDED COMMENT ON ANY PARTIAL OR UNILATERAL WITHDRAWAL OF FORCES ALLIED TO SOUTH VIETNAM. IT IS NOT KNOWN WHETHER PRESIDENT THIEU WILL MAINTAIN A SIMILAR SILENCE ON THE VIETNAM SITUATION, OR WHETHER, AS IN HIS VISIT LAST WEEK TO SOUTH KOREA, HE WILL MAKE HIS POSITION EMINENTLY CLEAR.

AT THE END OF HIS TAIWAN VISIT, PRESIDENT THIEU WILL FLY TO MIDWAY ISLAND FOR TALKS WITH PRESIDENT NIXON ON JUNE 8TH.
