    A DESTROYER OF THE ROYAL NAVY'S "MOTHBALL FLEET", H.M.S. ROEBUCK WAS BLOWN UP IN THE RIVER FORTH, IN SCOTLAND, TODAY (TUESDAY) TO TEST THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NEW UNDERWATER EXPLOSIVES AND TO ASCERTAIN HOW WARSHIPS CAN BE BETTER EQUIPPED TO WITHSTAND THEM. THE EXPERIMENTS ARE PART OF A JOINT RESEARCH PROGRAMMED BY THE BRITISH AND UNITED STATES NAVIES.

    THE ROEBUCK WAS BUILT AS A FLEET DESTROYED DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. IT WAS EXTENSIVELY ??? TO RECORD THE EFFECTS OF THE EXPLOSIONS AND FILM RECORDS OF THE SHOCK WAVES ARE EXPECTED TO YIELD VALUABLE DATA. THE DAMAGED ROEBUCK WILL EVENTUALLY BE SCRAPPED. IN SEPTEMBER, THE ROYAL NAVY'S SCIENTIFIC SERVICE WILL CARRY OUT A SIMILAR EXPERIMENT WITH THE H.M.S. BROADSWORD, BUILT IN 1940.

    EARLIER THIS YEAR TWO U.S. DESTROYERS WERE BLOWN UP AND SUNK OF KEY WEST, FLORIDA. AS PART OF THE JOINT RESEARCH PROGRAMME.
