  • Description

Professional surfing is booming in Australia, with new emphasis on junior competition drawing big crowds of fans to Sydney beaches.

Sponsors are putting up big money for small competitors, and many boys in their early teams are now hardened surfing professionals, riding a national " circuit" which often nets them more than their fathers earn in a year.

At North Narrabeen beach, Sydney, a searing 42-degree(Celsius) drew thousands to the Golden-Breed-Pepsi Professional Junior championship -- and there were so many people in the water that riders had a hard time clearing a path.

The waves weren't as big as usual -- but the competition was thrilling, with the youngsters showing all the skills of their top surfing idols.

These boys have a surfboard in their hands before they can read or write -- and the surf is their first love.

    J. Engel, of Queensland, edged out C. Horan, of New South Wales, with R. Marshall , New South Wales, third. Top prize was $500 ( Aust ) and the first 10 placegetters took home more than just pocketmoney.
