    Background: SISTINE CHAPEL, VATICAN CITY

Restoration has begun on the frescoes by Michaelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, the private chapel of the Pope in the Vatican. The work is part of a project begun two years ago to restore all the works on the walls of the Chapel, which was built in 1473. Michaelangelo painted the ceiling frescoes between 1508 and 1512, then took eight years to complete the magnificent 'Last Judgement' on the west wall (1533-1541). Time has taken its toll on these works: there are many cracks and some holes in the painting. Frescoes are painted on plaster, so restorers have to prepare the wall correctly before colour can be used. Fine plaster is applied to cover a rougher holding layer, the painting is then added before the plaster dries. This requires great skill as the restorers must know how a colour will dry in order to match the original. It is estimated that it will take 12 years to restore the whole chapel.
