  • Description

NO NEW OUTBREAKS OF VIOLENCE WERE REPORTED IN HARLEM AND OTHER NEGRO AREAS OF NEW YORK ON THURSDAY NIGHT, FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE BITTER DISTURBANCES EXPLODED LAST SATURDAY NIGHT IN HARLEM. THE RIOTS WERE SPARKED BY A RALLY PROTESTING ALLEGED POLICE BRUTALITY IN THE FATAL SHOOTING OF A 15-YEAR-OLD NEGRO BY A WHITE OFF-DUTY POLICEMAN.

HOWEVER, ON THURSDAY NIGHT 200 PICKETS REPRESENTING THE CONGRESS OF RACIAL EQUALITY DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE NEW YORK CITY'S POLICE HEADQUARTERS. THEY WERE PROTECTED FROM 1500 WHITE HECKLERS BY POLICE BARRIERS. THE HECKLERS SHOUTED SLOGANS AND THREW EGGS AND GARBAGE AT THE PICKETS.

THE POLICE, INCLUDING SIX OFFICERS ON HORSES, KEPT THE HECKLERS SO FAR BACK THAT NONE OF THE EGGS AND REFUSE REACHED THEIR TARGETS. THE PICKETS, WHO CARRIED PLACARDS READING "STATUS QUO MUST GO," AND "STOP POLICE KILLERS," INCLUDED SEVERAL CLERGYMEN.

WITH THE WEEKEND APPROACHING, A FORCE OF 2,000 POLICE WERE ALERTED, READY TO MOVE INTO HARLEM AND OTHER NEGRO AREAS IN THE CITY SHOULD THERE BE FRESH OUTBREAKS OF VIOLENCE.
