Miss Ann Haydon (Britain) took only 43 minutes to win the French Lawn Tennis Championship in Paris, May 27. She beat Miss Yola Ramirez (Mexico) 6-2, 6-1 in the women's singles. It was the 22-year-old British girl's first major championship. She was seeded sixth.
Maintaining the tip-top volleying and driving accuracy she has shown throughout the championship, she played almost faultlessly - after a shaky start - against a somewhat nervous and erratic opponent. Miss Ramirez was seeded fifth.
In the final of the men's singles, Manuel Santana (Spain), seeded sixth, beat Nicola Pietrangeli (Italy) 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. The over-confident Italian lost the title he had held for two years.
A heavy shower halted play in the deciding set with 23-year-old Santana having broken through to lead 3-2. After a delay of ten minutes, play resumed...and Santana won three games in a row for a great victory.
