  • Description

At a time of increasing Middle East peace initiatives, United Nations representatives of the Big Four powers were yesterday (Wednesday) reported to have broken the deadlock which has dogged their Middle East talks for the last 14 months.

French Ambassador Jacques Kosciusko-Morizet was host at yesterday's meeting with Soviet Ambassador Jacob Malik, U.S. Ambassador Charles Yost and British Charge d'Affarires D. Helyard -- standing in for Lord Caradon.

The Big Four representatives have been seeking a viable basis for the resumption of the U.N. peace keeping mission to the Middle East.

Their negotiations have been independent of American plans for an Arab-Israeli ceasefire, which are expected to be announced later today.

An indication of progress in the Big four talks came when the U.N. representatives fixed another meeting for next week -- instead of the usual three-week interval between talks.
