    Background: THE TANZANIAN MINISTER OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS MR. CHEDIL MGONJA AND MEMBERS OF THE TANZANIAN PARLIAMENT YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) COMPLETE SHOT SERVICE NATIONAL SERVICE TRAINING AT A MILITARY CAMP OUTSIDE DAR-ES-SALAAM.

    THE MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT WHO UNDERTOOK NATIONAL SERVICE TRAINING RESPONSE TO A CALL BY PRESIDENT NYERERE FOR MEN AND WOMEN TO UNDERTAKE MILITARY TRAINING.

    THE THREE MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT WHO TRAINED WITH MR. MGONJA JERAMIA, MEMBER FOR THE BUKODA REGION AND THE REVERENO D. MFAUME, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR THE WEST LAKE REGION, AND MR. KARANO, MEMBER FOR THE WEST LAKE REGION.

    THE FOUR POLITICIANS SPENT TWO MONTHS IN TRAINING. THE NORMAL PERIOD OF NATIONAL SERVICE IS FOUR MONTHS OF BASIC MILITARY TRAINING FOLLOWED BY 20 MONTHS OF AGRICULTURAL OR NATION-BUILDING WORK.

    NATIONAL SERVICE WAS INTRODUCED IN TANZANIA IN 1966, AND BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, AGED BETWEEN EIGHTEEN AND 35 ARE LIABLE FOR CALL-UP.

    MR. MGONJA, AGED 33, PASSED OUT WITH HONOURS, AND RECEIVED MERIT CERTIFICATE FROM THE TANZANIAN FIRST VICE-PRESIDENT, MR. ABEID KARUME. MR. KARUME SPOKE AT THE CEREMONY OF THE NEED FOR MORE PEOPLE TO UNDERTAKE MILITARY TRAINING.

    A NEW ARMY IS BEING FORMED IN TANZANIA. IT WILL HAVE FOUR BATTALIONS, A TOTAL OF 1,700 REGULAR TROOPS. THE ARMY IS EQUIPPED WITH WEAPONS FROM EASTERN EUROPE, THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, AND CANADA.
