  • Description

Caterbury's Archbishop Ramsey went to see Pope Paul this afternoon for a 'private' meeting at the Vatican.

The meeting had been set for five o'clock but Dr. Ramsey arrived at St. Peter's one hour earlier and instead of entering directly into the Vatican he first entered into St. Peter's Church.

Archbishop Ramsey alighted from his car and went up the steps leading into the Basilica. During this 'short walk' Dr. Ramsey was greeted and applauded by numerous nuns and priests who had gathered in the square waiting for his arrival. The Archbishop imparted holy Benediction on those present and as usual appeared his smiling and extremely 'congenial' self.

To one side of the crowd: near one of the fountains which stand in the square three Pastors of the Protestant Church formed a group. The three Pastors, by their presence, wished to protest against the 'meetings' taking place between the Head of the Protestant Church and the Head of the Roman Catholic Church.

As a further demonstration of their protest the three Protestant Ministers wore a black stripe on their left arms in 'sign of mourning'.

The presence of this 'dissident group' apparently had no effect on the Archbishop or on the crowd gathered to greet him.

The three 'dissidents' are: Rev. Brian Green (London) Mr. James McCarroll (Belfast) and Rev. Jack Glass (Glasgow).
