  • Description

Alexandre Romankov of the Soviet Union easily won the men's individual foil title at the world fencing championships in Buenos Aires on Friday (15 July).

SYNOPSIS: Romankov won every one of his five game -- including this one against Vladamir Smirnov, his teammate. Romankov beat Smirnov by five points to four in a keenly contested bout.

Italy's Carlo Montano, seen here on the left of the picture won the bronze medal. In this match he beat his team mate Andrea Borella by five points to nil.

One of the top contests of the finals was the match between Romankov and West German Harald Hein who eventually won the Silver medal. At one stage Hein was leading four points to three, but Romankov put to better use his dazzling speed and accuracy to emerge the winner.

Frenchman Bernard Talvard took fifth place and some of the points he gained for that position came from his win over Carlo Montano. He defeated the Italian by five points to two.

Romankov beat Borella by five to one to complete the unbeaten record. The left-handed Soviet player was the silver medallist in the last world championships. He was presented with his gold medal at a ceremony after the Championships.
