  • Description

THE BRITISH MINISTER WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR RHODESIAN AFFAIRS, MR GEORGE THOMSON, AND RHODESIAN PREMIER MR IAN SMITH TODAY (MONDAY) OPENED A NEW ROUND OF TALKS IN SALISBURY. THE TALKS ARE DESIGNED TO BREAK DOWN THE LAST -- AND THE BIGGEST -- BARRIERS TO A SETTLEMENT OF THE RHODESIAN INDEPENDENCE DISPUTE. MR THOMSON ARRIVED IN SALISBURY ON SATURDAY NIGHT.

YESTERDAY, AFTER MR THOMSON HAD ARRIVED, MR SMITH SAID RHODESIA AND BRITAIN WERE CLOSER TO A SETTLEMENT OF THE DISPUTE THAN THEY HAD EVER BEEN. BUT THE BRITISH TEAM HAS BEEN NON-COMMITTAL ABOUT THE POSSIBLE OUTCOME OF THE TALKS.

AT THE AIRPORT MR THOMSON MADE A BRIEF STATEMENT. HE TOLD REPORTERS THAT WHILE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN RHODESIA AND BRITAIN HAD BEEN NARROWED, THEY REMAINED DEEP. MR THOMSON WAS MET BY TWO RHODESIAN CABINET MINISTERS.

MR THOMSON LATER CALLED ON RHODESIAN GOVERNOR SIR HUMPHREY GIBBS AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE IN SALISBURY.
