    Background: The Minister for Commerce, Industry and Mines in Upper Volta, Mr. Emmanuel Zoma had talks with senior Indian ministers in New Delhi, India on Thursday (18 March).

    Mr. Zoma met the Indian Commerce Minister, Professor D.P. Chattopadhyaya, and the Steel Minister, Mr. Chiranjit Yadev, to discuss the possibility of Indian aid for Upper Volta.

    Professor Chattopadhyaya said India was keen to develop commercial relations with Upper Volta. He suggested that Mr. Zoma's delegation should study progress in the industrial, commercial and agricultural sectors of India and identify the specific areas in which India could extend co-operation.

    The Upper Volta minister said economic development was in its infancy in his country and they would welcome help from India either in the form of technical know-how or in developing indigenous technology.

    He identified small and medium scale industries such as oilseed processing, processing of hides and skins, flour mills and other agricultural-based industries as priority sectors.

    He also had talks at the Steel and Mines Ministry with the Steel Minister, Mr. Chiranjit Yadev. Mr. Zoma said economic development was in its infancy in his country and help from India either in the form of technical know-how or in developing indigenous technology would be of great benefit.

    He said development of agricultural-based industries was the main priority for Uppor Volta.
