  • Description

AS FRESH TENSION AROSE IN CYPRUS OVER THE WEEKEND FOLLOWING THE UNILATERAL ABROGATION OF THE TREATY OF ALLIANCE BETWEEN CYPRUS, GREECE AND TURKEY BY ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS, HUNDREDS OF GREEK-CYPRIOTS MARCHED THROUGH NICOSIA, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY), URGING THE RETURN OF THE FORMER EOKA LEADER GENERAL GRIVAS.

THE DEMONSTRATION BEGAN WITH A MEETING AT A LOCAL THEATRE AT WHICH TRADE UNIONS, VILLAGE AND TOWN REPRESENTATIVES AND EOKA VETERANS WERE REPRESENTED. AFTERWARDS, A LONG PROCESSION MADE ITS WAY THROUGH THE CITY TO THE GREEK EMBASSY, WHERE A DEPUTATION PRESENTED A PETITION CALLING FOR THE RETURN OF THE FORMER EOKA LEADER.

THE MARCHERS ALSO CALLED AT THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE TO DELIVER A SIMILAR PETITION TO PRESIDENT MAKARIOS, BUT NO ONE MET THE MARCHERS AND THE DOCUMENT WAS LATER DELIVERED BY A POLICEMAN.

THE ENDING OF THE TREATY HAS CAUSED SHARP REACTION IN ATHENS, ANKARA AND LONDON. THE CYPRIOT PRESIDENT'S MOVE AROUNSED FRESH FEARS OF POSSIBLE TURKISH INTERVENTION AND WAS COUNTERED BY A STATEMENT FROM THE GREEK GOVERNMENT FULLY SUPPORTING THE MOVE, AND DECLARING THAT ANY TURKISH MOVE WOULD BE MET BY RESISTANCE FROM GREECE.

IN LONDON, THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WAS CRITICAL OF THE MOVE, ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT A SIGNATORY TO THE ALLIANCE. A STATEMENT OF BRITAIN'S POSITION IS EXPECTED TO BE MADE IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS TOMORROW (TUESDAY).
