Background: INTRODUCTION: The deadline given by Spain's Basque separatist guerrillas for the demolition of a nearly-completed nuclear power station in return for the release of its kidnapped chief engineer passed on Friday (6 February) without news of his fate. Jose Maria Ryan was abducted a week ago by ETA guerrillas on his way home from work at the nuclear plant at Leminiz, near Bilbao.

SYNOPSIS: ETA complains that the plant, seen here under construction in 1977, was dumped on the Basque region, and is being built too close to people's homes. But the company building the plant claim it is needed in the Basque region.

Several thousand demonstrators, many of them employees of Iberduero, the company building the plant, marched peacefully through the rain in Bilbao to protest at the kidnapping. The Basque Nationalist Party, which heads the region's autonomous government, condemned ETA's action and said it was ready to accept ETA's challenge and all its consequences. In an earlier incident, a bomb exploded at an electricity transformer site, apparently killing one of ETA's own men. The blast, which occurred around midnight on Thursday (29 January) caused a blackout in the Pamplona area. ETA has mounted many such attacks in recent weeks, accusing the Basque government of being in favour of nuclear power.
