  • Description

THIS IS PIONEER MISSION CONTROL AT NASA'S AMES RESEARCH CENTER IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. CHARLES F. HALL IS PROJECT MANAGER.

PIONEER VENUS ONE WILL USE ITS RADAR TO PENETRATE THOSE CLOUDS AND PRODUCE A ROUGH TOPOGRAPHIC MAP OF MUCH OF THE VENUSIAN SURFACE FOR AT LEAST 243 DAYS AFTER IT GOES INTO ORBIT. THAT'S THE TIME IT TAKES FOR VENUS TO MAKE ONE FULL ROTATION ON ITS AXIS. MEANWHILE, THE PIONEER VENUS PROBE SPACECRAFT, LAUNCHED IN AUGUST, WILL MAKE ITS FINAL APPROACH.

THE PROBES ARE HEAVY SPHERES THAT RESEMBLE THOSE USED TO EXPLORE THE OCEAN FLOORS. PLU???GING DOWN SIMULTANEOUSLY, BUT AT WIDELY SEPARATED PLACES, NONE IS EXPECTED TO SURVIVE THE LANDINGS.

EIGHTY MINUTES AFTER THE PROBES, THE LAUNCHING PLATFORM OF "BUS" AS IT IS CALLED, SLAMS UNPROTECTED INTO THE VENUSIAN ATMOSPHERE, MAKING THE MISSIONS ONLY MEASUREMENTS OF THE IONOSPHERE AND UPPER ATMOSPHERE AS IT DISINTEGRATES.

TOGETHER, PIONEERS VENUS ONE AND TWO ARE EXPECTED TO REVEAL MUCH ABOUT THE ATMOSPHERE AND WEATHER PATTERNS OF VENUS, PERHAPS ENABLING US TO BETTER UNDERSTAND OUR OWN PLANET'S WEATHER. THEIR SCIENTIFIC RETURNS MAY ALSO HELP EXPLAIN WHY EARTH AND VENUS, NEARLY IDENTICAL IN SIZE AND DENSITY, HAVE DEVELOPED SO DIFFERENTLY.

SYNOPSIS: IT'S NINE HUNDRED DEGREES HOT AT THE SURFACE, HAS POWERFUL HIGH ALTITUDE WINDS, AND IS BLANKETED BY A DENSE CARBON DIOXIDE ATMOSPHERE. THE PLANET VENUS. ALTHOUGH THE SAME SIZE AND DENSITY AS EARTH, THE SIMILARITIES END THERE. EARTH HAS WATER AND LIFE--VENUS IS DESOLATE--DRY--APPARENTLY LIFELESS.

THIS IS THE FIRST OF TWO PIONEER VENUS SPACECRAFT THAT NASA SCIENTISTS ARE COUNTING ON TO PROBE SOME OF THE MYSTERIES OF THIS INTERESTING PLANET.

LAUNCHED ON MAY 20TH, THE PIONEER VENUS ORBITER SPACECRAFT WILL TRAVEL SOME 300 MILLION MILES THROUGH SPACE, ARRIVING AT VENUS ON DECEMBER FOURTH. IT WILL MAKE A COMPLETE REVOLUTION OF THE PLANET EVERY 24, HOURS, SWINGING AS FAR OUT AS 41,000 MILES AND DROPPING AS LOW 90 MILES. IT IS THEN THAT THE PIONEER VINUS ORBITER DIPS INTO THE UPPER FRINGES OF THE VENUSIAN ATMOSPHERE TO BEGIN ITS SCIENTIFIC RECONNAISSANCE.
