  • Description

VOTERS IN OKINAWA WENT TO THE POLLS ON SUNDAY TO ELECT A NEW LEGISLATURE AND A NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE IN THE UNITED STATES ADMINISTERED TERRITORY. MR CHOBYO YARA, A TEACHER, WON THE ELECTIONS FOR THE POST OF CHIEF EXECUTIVE, BUT IN THE LEGISLATIVE ELECTIONS THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS -- WHO HAVE UNTIL NOW DOMINATED OKINAWAN POLITICS -- RETAINED THEIR MAJORITY WITH A TOTAL OF 18 OUT OF 32 SEATS. THE ELECTORAL CAMPAIGN WAS FOUGHT OVER THE ISSUE OF THE RETURN OF OKINAWA TO JAPANESE CONTROL.

ABOUT 90% OF THE 518,000 VOTERS ELIGIBLE WENT TO THE POLLS.

MR YARA'S MAIN OPPONENT FOR THE TOP GOVERNMENT POST WAS MR JUNJI NISHIME, THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY'S CANDIDATE. HIS PARTY ADVOCATED THE PROMOTION OF JAPAN-OKINAWA UNIFICATION MEASURES AND GRADUAL REVERSION TO JAPANESE CONTROL.

MR YARA, WHO IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE OKINAWA TEACHERS ASSOCIATION WAS SUPPORTED BY A COALITION OF LEFT-WING PARTIES INCLUDING THE SOCIALIST PARTY. AFTER HIS ELECTION MR YARA SAID THAT HE WOULD TRY TO SECURE WHAT HE CALLED "IMMEDIATE AND UNCONDITIONAL RETURN OF OKINAWA TO JAPAN." THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY MAY BE OVERRULED BY THE UNITED STATES.

(OKINAWA IS THE BIGGEST OF THE TYUKU GROUP OF ISLANDS, LOCATED SOUTH OF THE JAPANESE MAINLAND, WHICH CAME UNDER UNITED STATES CONTROL AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR. THE UNITED STATES WERE GRANTED FORMAL POWER OF ADMINISTRATION UNDER THE UNITED STATES-JAPAN PEACE TREATY IN 1952. OKINAWA WAS GRANTED INTERNAL AUTONOMY IN 1965. IT HOUSES ONE OF THE UNITED STATES BIGGEST FOREIGN MILITARY BASES.)
