  • Description

MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH THIRD LIGHT INFANTRY REGIMENT LAST TUESDAY (1 APRIL) BEGAN MAKING PREPARATIONS FOR THEIR PLANNED WITHDRAWAL FROM TERENDEK CAMP IN MALACCA, ON THE WEST COAST OF MALAYSIA. THE MOVE IS PART OF THE PLANNED PULLOUT OF BRITISH FORCES FROM THE FAR EAST IN 1971.

TERENDEK CAMP IS THE BASE OF THE COMMONWEALTH BRIGADE, WHICH INCLUDES AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND TROOPS.

ON TUESDAY, BRITISH TROOPS WERE PACKING AND STORING VARIOUS TYPES OF MILITARY EQUIPMENT TO BE SHIPPED TO THE UNITED KINGDOM LATER THIS WEEK.

BRIGADIER R.M. GUR, THE COMMANDER OF THE GARRISON, TOOK PERSONAL CHARGE OF THE PACKING OPERATION.

THE RECENTLY-APPOINTED COMMANDER OF BRITISH FORCES IN THE FAR EAST, ADMIRAL SIR PETER HILL-NORTON, WAS PRESENT DURING THE PREPARATIONS, AND PLANTED A TREE TO MARK HIS VISIT TO THE CAMP.

AUSTRALIAN TROOPS ARE ALSO PREPARING TO LEAVE TERENDEK CAMP. THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO MOVE FORCES FROM MALAYSIA TO SINGAPORE IN THE WAKE OF THE BRITISH WITHDRAWAL HAS BEEN SHARPLY CRITICISED BY THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT.

MALACCA'S ECONOMY IS PARTIALLY DEPENDENT UPON THE COMMONWEALTH BRIGADE AND WILL STAND TO LOSE ABOUT 2.2 MILLION AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS APPROXIMATELY (GBP 1.1 MILLION POUNDS) A YEAR IN AUSTRALIAN SPENDING.

TERENDEK CAMP IS TO COME UNDER THE POSSESSION OF THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT IN 1971, BUT ITS FINAL USE HAS NOT YET BEEN DECIDED.
