Background: In Rome five women were injured when terrorists attacked a left-wing radio station on Tuesday (9 January). Responsibility has been claimed by a group of right-wing extremists. The attack is the latest in a series of acts of political violence which have hit Rome in the last few days.

SYNOPSIS: After the attack newsmen rushed to the studios of Radio Citta Futura, in the Eastern part of the city. The station is one of many which have been established in Italy in recent years. Five housewives were taking part in a studio discussion when masked gunmen burst in, setting fire to the building and shooting at the women from close range. Fire engines were soon on the scene to put out the blaze.

Responsibility for the raid has been claimed by the neo-fascist Armed Revolutionary Nucleus. Last week the group fire-bombed a left-wing bookshop crowded with customers and children.

The attacks come near the anniversary of the death of three right-wing youths killed by leftist extremists in January last year. The latest fire caused extensive damage and put the radio station off the air. The women, including one hit by six bullets, are all reported in a satisfactory condition in hospital. During the raid their screams and the explosions were audible to the programme's listeners. After the attack, police sealed off the area with roadblocks, and found the car used by the gunmen abandoned about one kilometre (half a mile) away.
