  • Description

The annual Fiesta de la Vendimia (Grape-picking festival) brought traditional Spanish gaiety to the streets of Jerez, the town which gave its name to one of the world's favourite drinks (Sherry is a corruption of Jerez).

The junketing lasts for four days, and as well as a round of private parties there is a fair and a procession.

This year, however, although there was still the traditional ceremony of treading the grapes, the real harvest has been delayed by a wet summer.

But there is a far greater cause for gloom for the Spanish sherry industry, which last year earned GBP18,000,000 abroad. It's the likelihood that harsh tariffs will be imposed by the European Common Market on wine imported from non-Market countries.

SYNOPSIS: As the people of Jerez watched the traditional ceremony of blessing the grapes, many of them must have been praying for a more hopeful future.

After the grapes are blessed they are distributed to the men who tread them in the traditional way. Nowadays modern machinery is used for bulk production, but the old way is remembered at fiesta time, the time when everyone forgets their worries in the carnival atmosphere.
