Background: SOME OF THE 433 DEPENDENTS OF U.S. GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL IN THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC LEFT CAIRO BY AIR YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) FOR ATHENS WHERE THEY WILL REMAIN UNTIL CONDITIONS PERMIT THEIR RETURN TO CAIRO. EARLIER, 200 EGYPTIAN POLICE GUARDED THE U.S. EMBASSY AND SURROUNDING AREA AS STUDENTS FROM CAIRO UNIVERSITY DEMONSTRATED.

AT CAIRO AIRPORT, TEARFUL WIVES EMBRACED THEIR HUSBANDS WHO TRIED TO REASSURE THEM. THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN CAIRO ANNOUNCED ON THURSDAY THAT ALL THE DEPENDENTS OF AMERICAN DIPLOMATS IN THE U.A.R. WOULD LEAVE FOR CAIRO WITHIN A FEW DAYS. THE EMBASSY HAS ALSO SUGGESTED THAT OTHER AMERICANS LIVING IN THE COUNTRY SHOULD 'CONSIDER THE SERIOUS DESIRABILITY OF LEAVING THE U.A.R. WHILE COMMERCIAL TRANSPORTATION IS AVAILABLE.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT SOME 3,000 NON OFFICIAL AMERICAN CITIZENS LIVE IN THE U.A.R. ARRANGEMENTS ARE BEING MADE FOR BRITISH WIVES AND CHILDREN TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

MEANWHILE, AHMED EL SHUKAIRY, THE LEADER OF THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANISATION VISITED THE EL AZHAR MOSQUE IN CAIRO YESTERDAY. AFTER PRAYING INSIDE, HE ADDRESSED A CHEERING CROWD OF ARABS.
