  • Description

BRITAIN HAS AGREED TO EVACUATE ALL ITS FORCES AND LIQUIDATE ITS MILITARY BASES IN EASTERN LIBYA BY THE END OF MARCH. THE DECISION WAS MADE AT THE SECOND ROUND OF TALKS BETWEEN THE LIBYAN AND BRITISH GOVERNMENTS IN TRIPOLI ON DECEMBER 9.

THE BRITISH DELEGATION WAS LED BY MR. DONALD MAITLAND WHILE HEADING THE LIBYANS WAS CAPTAIN ABDUL SALEM JALLOUD, A MEMBER OF THE NEW RULING REVOLUTIONARY COMMAND PARTY.

THE EVACUATION WILL START IMMEDIATELY. ABOUT 1,700 BRITISH SERVICEMEN AND TECHNICIANS AND FAMILIES ARE STATIONED AT THE DESERT PORT OF TORBRUK AND THE LARGE AIRFIELD AT NEARBY AL ADEM. THE STATIONING OF THE FORCES RESULTED FROM AN AGREEMENT WITH KING IDRIS OF LIBYA WHO WAS OUSTED IN A COUP ON SEPTEMBER 1. THE LIBYAN RADIO SAID THAT LIBYA AND BRITAIN HAD AGREED TO FORM JOINT COMMITTEES TO FACILITATE THE EVACUATION.

BOTH SIDES EXPRESSED THEIR SATISFACTION AT REACHING AGREEMENT AND FIXING A DATE FOR THE EVACUATION WHICH WOULD PAVE THE WAY FOR ESTABLISHING GOOD RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO PEOPLES.
