  • Description

Stated to have cost more than GBP325,000, the new nine-storey high Arab League headquarters in Liberty Square, Cairo, Egypt, was inaugurated Mar 22. As a military band played the national anthems, flags of the ten member States were hoisted by their envoys.

The flag of Tunisia - which country at present has no diplomatic relations with the United Arab Republic - was raised by the League's Secretary-General, Abdelkhalek Hassouna.

Made available to the League in 1954, the site was the former British 'Kasr Nil Barracks'. Construction on the building - said to be a smaller replica of the United Nations building in New York - began the following year, but was subject to several delays.

League secretariat offices have hitherto been centred in and around a somewhat dilapidated old palace in the Bab-el-Louk district of Cairo.
