    Liberian President William Tolbert was greeted by Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda when he arrived at Lusaka airport on Thursday (27 June) for a five day visit to zambia.

    At a reception shortly afterwards, President Tolbert said that African leaders and people should not be divided but should join forces to make Africa a great continent. At the recent Organisation of African Unity conference in Somalia, there was considerable difference of opinion between the predominantly Arab north and the central and southern countries.

    President Kaunda replied that there was not enough contact between eastern, central and western African countries because of the distances involved. He congratulated President Tolbert on hiring a special Swiss aircraft to overcome the transport problem.

    President Tolbert, who is accompanied by 30 ministers and officials, opened the Zambian Trade Fair the next day.

    Both presidents made statements emphasising the need for sacrifices and co-operation if the oppressed areas of Africa were to be liberated.

    SYNOPSIS: He received a warm welcome from a large crowd. President Kenneth Kaunda and prime Minister Mainza Chona were there to greet President Tolbert who was due to open the Zambian Trade Fair at Ndola later in the week.

    He had to charter a special Swiss aircraft for himself and his thirty-man entourage to travel from Liberia. President Kaunda later congratulated him on his determination to overcome transport problems which often limited state visits on the African continent.

    Both presidents later made speeches at a reception i Lusaka. President Tolbert said the difference between African countries should not be allowed to undermine the struggle to achieve freedom and dignity for all African peoples. He was referring to the Organisation of African Unity conference in Somalia when a considerable difference of opinion emerged between the predominantly Arab north and the southern countries.

    He explained that both Liberia and Zambia believed in the common ideal that all nations should become part of one great world-wide society.

    President Kaunda described his guest as a great leader who had fought unceasingly for those who lived under racialist oppression.
