  • Description

POLICE USED MOBILE WATER PUMPS IN BELGIUM TODAY (SUNDAY) TO CONTROL HUNDREDS OF YOUNG FLEMISH NATIONALISTS OUTSIDE THE MAIN CHURCH IN MALINES. THE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE AIMED AT THE BELGIUM PRIMATE, CARDINAL JOSEPH SUENENS, WHO SPOKE AT THE SAINT ROMBAUT CHURCH.

IT WAS YET ANOTHER IN THE LONG SERIES OF DEMONSTRATIONS OVER THE BELGIAN LANGUAGE PROBLEM -- THE FLEMISH SPEAKING NORTH VERSUS THE FRENCH SPEAKING WALOONS OF THE SOUTH.

THE DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE PRIMATE WERE TRIGGERED OFF BY A RECENT DECISION OF BELGIAN BISHOPS TO KEEP THE 540 YEAR-OLD LOUVAIN UNIVERSITY BI-LINGUAL, WITH EQUAL RIGHTS FOR FLEMISH AND FRENCH-SPEAKING STUDENTS.

DURING CARDINAL SUENENS'S SERMON PART OF THE CONGREGATION COUGHED LOUDLY AND SANG THE NEGRO CIVIL RIGHTS HYMN "WE SHALL OVERCOME." OTHERS APPLAUDED THE CARDINAL.

OUTSIDE THE DEMONSTRATORS CHANTED "SUENENS OR BARABAS" AS THEY MILLED ABOUT THE CHURCH. RIOT SQUADS MOVED IN USING TRUNCHEONS AND A FIRE ENGINE. SEVERAL ARRESTS WERE MADE, AND POLICE RESTORED CALM AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR.
